Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (2011)

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close touches the viewer on the very core. In the best way that Titanic and The Sweet Hereafter depicted tragedy by pulling back on the pivotal moment, only enhancing the heartache portrayed, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close shows the massive losses proficient in The big apple on September 11, 2001, over the lens of one young boy. Thomas Horn plays Oskar, a boy specialized in his dad (played by Tom Hanks, in flashbacks), who's lost in the attacks about the World Trade Center. The devastation of the day shudders through Oskar's family, including his mother, Linda (Sandra Bullock, in a subdued and affecting turn). Young Oskar is lost within the broken new world, but suddenly finds a purpose: an important left by his father. As Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close progresses, Oskar focuses for the key being a strategy to hook up to his lost father--but finds, instead, connections inside the unlikeliest of places. Horn is often a wonder in the leading role, and commands attention even as his emotions are scattered. Hanks and Bullock are excellent, as always, though they're more incidental to the film than the viewer could have hoped. Standing out inside the cast is Max von Sydow, a mysterious mute whom Oskar meets around the New York subway, and who becomes probably the most unlikely of guardian angels. Based on Jonathan Safran Foer's best-selling novel, that was capable to depict a lttle bit more wry humor to leaven the heartbreak and history lessons, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close nonetheless faces human tragedy straight on, and shows what sort of broken family might be rebuilt, one small key, one subway ride, one awkward hug in a time. --A.T. In this fractured fairy tale, Jack and Jill have the magic beans and Humpty Dumpty, using the aid of Kitty Softpaws, convinces his old friend Puss in Boots to help you him steal the beans so they could climb the beanstalk to have for the golden eggs. Don't worry that Humpty Dumpty and Puss in Boots were built with a falling out years ago, or that Jack and Jill are completely preoccupied by their squabbling over whether or never to have a very child--and regardless that Puss in Boots is a wanted cat who's sworn off his thieving ways, and Kitty Softpaws is often a cat burglar who works alone. Comedy abounds within this film, not only inside twists and turns of some classic favorite anecdotes gone awry, though scenes that range coming from a litter-box dance fight between crowds of cats to Jack expressing his paternal instincts by strapping on an infant carrier filled using a piglet inside a diaper, and, of course, Puss in Boots' crafty use of his famous sad eyes to get just what he wants. The animation is top-notch (especially inside mass cat scenes), the songs is compelling, and also the voice talents of Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Zack Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, and Amy Sedaris are solid. While considered by some to be a prequel of sorts on the four Shrek films, Puss in Boots is unquestionably a stand-alone spinoff. What are the films do share can be a common comedic interpretation of some well-known fairy-tale characters and knack for spinning a funny story that attracts both kids and adults. While a heightened a feeling of peril and several extended fight scenes may prove a little intense for your youngest and most sensitive audience members, Puss in Boots is usually appropriate for ages 7 and older. --Tami Horiuchi

The impact of parents on their own children has rarely been captured while using wit and compassion of Beginners, a sweet comedy about love and fear. Ewan McGregor, perhaps probably the most charming actor alive, plays a graphic artist named Oliver, whose elderly father Hal (played with a deft mix of twinkle and gravitas by Christopher Plummer) comes out as gay after Oliver's mother dies. Alas, Hal also discovers he has terminal cancer--but he crams just as much life in the time left to him as they can. Beginners skips forward and backward between Oliver's last months with his father with his fantastic first months having a young actress, Anna (Mélanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds), towards whom he feels a mesmerizing attraction… sufficient reason for whom he shares a paralyzing fear of intimacy. All that sounds ponderous and drab, but Beginners could be the exact opposite. Writer-director Mike Mills brings a wonderfully light and wistfully humorous touch to those heavy topics, also as a close look for engaging visuals. Mills and the outstanding cast delicately weave the different threads of Oliver's life right into a delicate but emotionally potent whole. Mills's previous film, Thumbsucker, showed promise; Beginners fulfills it. --Bret Fetzer
