The delightful Kristen Wiig, who's shone in a large number of supporting roles and also on Saturday Night Live, hits a bull's-eye with her first lead role in Bridesmaids. Annie (Wiig) isn't doing so well; her bakery failed and she or he keeps sleeping with a good-looking louse (Jon Hamm, Mad Men), but she's always had her best ally Lillian (Maya Rudolph, Away We Go) to buoy her up… until Lillian gets engaged. Annie becomes maid of honor, but another friend of Lillian's--the rich and lovely Helen (Rose Byrne, Get Him for the Greek)--wants to take over that position. Misadventures with bad Brazilian food, dress fittings, an unfortunate flight to Vegas, plus a sympathetic traffic cop (Chris O'Dowd from British TV comedy The IT Crowd) follow, with increasingly hilarious results. Bridesmaids successfully balances raunchy comedy and character portrait. The embarrassing and socially catastrophic stuff, which in lots of movies balloons into absurdity, is here kept under control just enough to allow Annie and one other characters to become multidimensional people--without the movie losing its comic convenience of cringe. (Actress Melissa McCarthy, of Mike & Molly, works miracles having a character when compared to most hands could be pure cartoon.) Wiig's enormous appeal keeps Annie sympathetic, even as she becomes more plus much more of an train wreck. Bridesmaids is both smart and dumb, raunchy and earnest, and altogether enjoyable. --Bret Fetzer

Paris is often a city that lends itself to daydreaming, to walking the streets and imagining all sorts of magic, a quality that Woody Allen understands perfectly. Midnight in Paris is Allen's charming reverie about exactly that quality, with a screenwriter hero named Gil (Owen Wilson) who strolls the lanes of Paris with his head in the clouds and walks right into his or her own best fantasy. Gil perhaps there is along with his materialistic fiancée (Rachel McAdams) and her unpleasant parents, taking an escape from his financially rewarding but spiritually unfulfilling Hollywood career--and he can't stop convinced that all he wants to do is quit the movies, proceed to Paris, and write that novel he's been meaning to finish. You know, be similar to his heroes inside the bohemian Paris in the 1920s. Sure enough, a midnight encounter draws him in to the jazzy arena of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Picasso and Dali, plus an intense Ernest Hemingway, who promises to create Gil's manuscript to Gertrude Stein for review. Gil awakens every day back inside the real world, but going back to his enchanted Paris proves fairly easy. In the execution on this marvelous fantasia, Allen pursues the idea that people of the generation have always romanticized a previous age as golden (this is at fact explained to us by Michael Sheen's pedantic art expert), but he also honors Gil's have to learn certain truths for himself. The movie's on the side of gentle fantasy, also it has some literary/cinematic in-jokes that call back towards the type of goofy humor Allen created in Love and Death. The film is guilty of the slackness that Allen's latter-day directing has sometimes shown, as well as the underwritten roles for McAdams and Marion Cotillard are better acted than written. But town glows with Allen's romantic a sense it, and Owen Wilson has just the best nice-guy melancholy to put the concept over. A worthy entry inside Cinema from the Daydream. --Robert Horton

This is really a romantic comedy emerge Paris in relation to a family that goes there as a result of business, as well as young individuals who are engaged to be married within the fall have experiences there that change their lives. It's about a little daughter man's great love for any city, Paris, as well as the illusion people have a life different from theirs would be much better.
