The Adventures of Tintin follows the exciting exploits of a young reporter, his dog, a sea captain using a drinking problem, along with a handful of bumbling Interpol detectives while they travel from Europe on the Sahara and Morocco in pursuit of your pickpocket, model-ship collectors, and long-lost treasure. Steven Spielberg's and Peter Jackson's long-awaited full-length film, based around the original "Tintin" comics by Hergé, combines the stories "The Secret of the Unicorn," "Red Rackham's Treasure," and "The Crab while using Golden Claws" in to a generally fast-paced adventure that feels merely a tad too long. The individual stories as well as the characters Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, and Thompson and Thomson are quite faithfully represented. The motion-capture animation is just like those of Polar Express and is also both fascinating and a bit odd at times. As within the comics themselves, the characters are highly stylized and instantly recognizable, but Tintin's facial expression is eerily stoic and there's a hint of strangeness that's hard to place a finger on. Snowy is delightfully funny to watch, though he or she is a bit fluffier than inside the original comics, and also the real animation standouts are the secondary characters like Thompson and Thomson and Captain Haddock, who somehow seem absolutely perfect. Devoted fans will revel within the abundance of small details that reference the comics and suggest a real fascination with "Tintin" for the filmmakers' parts, but even viewers who have no idea a thing in relation to its the comics will thoroughly love this particular exciting adventure. (Ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

The Artist Oscars DVD
The Artist Oscars Winners DVD
The Artist can be a love letter and homage to classic black-and-white silent films. The film is enormously likable and is anchored by the charming performance from Jean Dujardin, as silent movie star George Valentin. In late-1920s Hollywood, as Valentin wonders if the arrival of talking pictures can cause him to fade into oblivion, he makes an intense reference to Peppy Miller, a new dancer looking for a large break. As one career declines, another flourishes, and by channeling elements of A Star Comes In The World and Singing inside the Rain, The Artist tells the engaging story with humor, melodrama, romance, and--most importantly--silence. As wonderful because the performances by Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo (Miller) are, the real star of The Artist is cinematographer Guillaume Schiffman. Visually, the film is stunning. Crisp and beautifully contrasted, each frame can be so wonderfully constructed until this sweet and unique little movie is transformed from entertaining fluff with a profound cinematic achievement. --Kira Cannyread more Details

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is perhaps all sleek, stealthy elegance. High-ranking intelligence officer George Smiley (Gary Oldman) was forced from service each time a mission in Hungary went very wrong, but rumors of your Soviet mole hidden inside agency bring him back to play. If your theory with the former head, Control (John Hurt), is being believed, the mole is with the very top, one of four senior officers, played by Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds, Colin Firth, and David Dencik (of the Swedish Girl while using Dragon Tattoo). With the help of a lower-ranking agent having a few strategies of his very own (Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock) and a field agent who may be a source of disinformation (Tom Hardy, Inception), Smiley slowly draws your clues he needs to put a trap for that mole. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy moves gracefully, with brief but unhurried scenes giving a suggestion of info here, a dollop of implication there, prior to the larger picture (painted inside a cinematic chiaroscuro of grays, blues, and browns) comes tantalizingly into focus. Don't expect Hitchcock-like suspense, though there are a couple of anxious sequences; this movie captures the blend of dread and bureaucracy that marks real-life intelligence work. Oldman plays Smiley as uncannily opaque and, around the surface, harmless--but his eyes hold a deep bitterness that can turn sorrowful or cruel. The masterful cast glides from the film, their subterfuges and machinations orchestrated just like a dance by director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Correct In). --Bret Fetzer

In resourceful orphan Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield, an Oliver Twist-like charmer), Martin Scorsese finds the perfect vessel for his silver-screen passion: this can be a movie about movies (fittingly, the 3-D effects are spectacular). After his clockmaker father (Jude Law) perishes in a very museum fire, Hugo goes to call home regarding his Uncle Claude (Ray Winstone), a drunkard who maintains the clocks with a Paris train station. When Claude disappears, Hugo carries on his work and fends for himself by stealing food from area merchants. In his free time, he attempts to repair an automaton his father rescued from your museum, while attempting to evade the station inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen), a World War I veteran without having sympathy for lawbreakers. When Georges (Ben Kingsley), a toymaker, catches Hugo stealing parts for his mechanical man, he recruits him being an assistant to repay his debt. If Georges is guarded, his open-hearted ward, Isabelle (Chloë Moretz), introduces Hugo with a kindly bookseller (Christopher Lee), who directs them to a motion-picture museum, where they meet film scholar René (Boardwalk Empire's Michael Stuhlbarg). In helping unlock the key of the automaton, they learn regarding the roots of cinema, starting using the Lumière brothers, and offer a forgotten movie pioneer his due, thus illustrating the value of film preservation, a cause to that the director has dedicated his life. If Scorsese's adaptation of The Invention of Hugo Cabret isn't his most autobiographical work, it just could be his most personal. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

When wily and resourceful Hugo discovers a secret left by his father, he unlocks a mystery and embarks over a quest which will transform those around him and lead to a safe and loving place he is actually able to call home.
